2008 IRF AUSTRALASIAN RAFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS
< Nagara-gawa Whitewater Festival >

Greeting:
Nagara-gawa whitewater festival, known as the biggest rafting event in Japan, is the 15th anniversary this year. This event started with referring to the Project raft world champs in Turkey '93. Now it is a part of Japan cup rafting race and there are about 50 teams coming every year. All the staffs related to this event are real rafting lovers and has experienced 2001 IRF Australasian champs so we all have knowhow to which an international event is made to succeed!! It will be great pleasure if we could celebrate this event with a lot of international guests.
DATES: 11 – 13 Oct 2008
LOCATION: Japan, Nagara River, Gifu. Located in middle of Japan.
RIVER: Nagara-river, Gifu. Grade 3-4 Medium volume Whitewater (30-80cms) with continues rapid. It is
completely natural Whitewater. The view from the river is typically Japanese countryside’s view.

ENTRY FEE: US$100 per person to cover transportation from and to the airport, accommodation, all
meals, transport on and off from the river during the event.
RACE FORMAT:
*Sprint = <3 dan rapids> 250-300m class 3 rapid all over
*Slalom =<3 dan rapids> 250-300m class 3 rapid all over
*Downriver = Start from Gujo hot-spring to finish at ODSS river base. 14km. Grade 3 - 4 rapids.
TRAVEL:
The nearest international airport is Centrair airport (http://www.centrair.jp/en/index.html) which is located
in middle of Japan. From airport to Gifu, It’s about 150 km distance and 1.5h to 2 h drive. It costs 3000yen
for highway fee. There are also train from Nagoya to Gifu. It takes 50mn and costs 1500yen per person.
We will transfer the overseas competitor (per team) from the airport to the event location.
ACCOMMODATION, MEALS AND STAYING:
All teams, staffs and media will be staying at the traditional Japanese style <Sizenen cottages>.
(http://www.shizenen.com/) There is ceremony hole, office room with internet facilities, hot bath, and
laundry and so on. Meals will be combined with Japanese and international food. Transport to the event
venue will be provided. Gujo Gifu is the one of the traditional sightseeing spot with Onsen (hot-spring).
RAFTS AND EQUIPMENT:
Official raft will be Incept W43SX 14feet Self-Bailer, 4.3m with 3thwarts.
Teams are responsible for their own PFD, paddles, paddling clothing, throw bags and any additional
paddling accessories they might require. Water temperature is about 17-20ºC and air temperature is 6-20
ºC at the event time. A 3mm wetsuit for cold days and rash guard & short pants for hot days is
recommended for the competitor.
TEAMS:
This event is the Australasian Championship officially recognized by IRF. Any international teams are
welcome. However; only countries that are members of the IRF may qualify. Please contact IRF

INSURANCE: it is recommended that competitors get their own travel insurance.
